The towing capacity of a vehicle depends on the kerb weight of the vehicle, which will be in your manual. There is some variation in the kerb weights of a particular vehicle depending on the model and engine size. That is the maximum that the car can tow.
Usually trailers being towed by people in landrovers or 4x4s (4 wheel drives)
Few vehicles are designed to tow heavy loads; even the big 4x4s are often not up to towing a trailer with a couple of horses and loads of towing vehicles on the road are neither safe nor legal. Land Rover Discoveries are probably best suited.
It is advisable to have a goose neck or a fifth wheel hitch, because they are very stable. If there are hills you have to go up and down, a small cars brakes may not be able to hold that trailer back. You may damage your brakes and transmission.
